The Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai is proud to announce the iconic American fashion designer Anna Sui’s retrospective exhibition – The World of Anna Sui from 6 June to 30 August. This exhibition features more than 100 works from her design archive including fashion sketches, original fashion looks, accessories, brand elements and visual recording of fashion shows, and illuminates Sui’s creative process and cultural elements that contribute to her signature aesthetic system.
Anna Sui’s early inspirations came from her obsession with rock music. This exhibition brings together thirteen archetypes of her iconic signature such as Mod, Punk, Schoolgirl, Hippie and Nomad, discovering the interaction between her designs and the evolution of pop culture. Meanwhile, five mood boards which capture her creative inspirations are also presented along with several invitations for Anna Sui’s early fashion shows. Designed by artists such as Dean ‘Chooch’ Landry and Jeffrey Fulvimari, these invitations provide a visual reference for the development of her designs through her career.
“Sui’s exquisite talent of translating pop culture phenomena into fashion has positioned her not only as a unique fashion designer, but also as an artist with a distinct voice and language,” announced MAM Shanghai.
Anna Sui is a Chinese American born in Detroit, Michigan. Sui studied at Parsons School of Design but started working in the fashion industry before graduation. Sui’s creative career spans decades: from the blockbuster collections of her early series in the 1980s which broke the “stereotype” fashion classic, to her first runway show in 1991 that attracted many top-tier models to support. She has become one of the iconic and beloved fashion designers in New York, with her followers around the fashion, art and music world.
Over the past forty years, Sui built her long-standing fashion empire. Her personal fashion brand categories include fashion, accessories, cosmetics, fragrances, home supplies etc., which are exported to more than 30 countries around the world. In recent years, Sui has been developing a closer relationship with the fashion industry in China. She established a new brand line, Anna Sui Active, in 2018 and opened boutiques in Beijing and Shanghai in 2019.
Since Shanghai is the city of her ancestors, the launching of The World of Anna Sui in Shanghai is not only a sign of her recognition and discovery to the Chinese fashion industry, but also an expression of the emotional connection to her ethnicity, a sense of belonging, and marker of her self-identification.
As one of the top New York-based designers who greatly influenced American pop and fashion culture, Anna Sui was twice awarded the Fashion Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), considered the “Oscars” of the fashion world. The New York Times defined Sui as a “never panders” designer. In 2010 she was named one of the “Top 5 Fashion Icons of the Decade” by Times Magazine, and in March 2020, she was given the Medal of Honor for Achievement in Fashion by the National Arts Club in the United States.
The World of Anna Sui debut at the Fashion and Textile Museum London, 2017 with popular acclaims. Later it was on display in Tokyo in the summer of 2018, and at the Museum of Arts and Design New York, 2019. Now it’s coming to Shanghai and provides an engaging experience for visitors who are fascinated with Sui’s extraordinary fashion magic.
